マップソリューションは次の時代へと突入するかもしれません。
9to5 MacによるとAppleは3Dマッピングの企業であるC3 Technologiesを買収していたそうです。
実際には8月に買収されていたそうですが、その時には、どの企業が買収をしたのかはっきりと解っていなかったそうで、今になってようやく解ったそうです。情報ソースはC3 TechnologiesのCEO Mattias Astrom氏、CFO Kjell Cederstrand氏、プロダクトマネージャー Ludvig Emgard氏の3人で、この3人については既にApple社内のiOSチームにて開発を進めているそうです。
同社はCES 2011にて3Dマッピング技術にてAndroidおよびiOSデバイスでデモを行い、大成功を収めました。その時の技術にていくつかビデオがありますので、以下に公開しておきます。このビデオではノルウェーのオスロの3Dマップになります。

マップアプリは以前からGoogleマップを使用されていて、ここ2年くらいはAppleもマップアプリの開発をしてきてGoogleマップから開放しようという動きがありましたから、今後の動きが楽しみですね。
